![]() ![]() There's a reason why- for one reason or another- the Saxons are often the first (or one of the first) factions I destroy as the Western Romans. Because if you drive the cavalry away, what's left?Ī huge, orange mass of infantry that is just ripe to be outmaneuvered, shot at, and cut to pieces. ![]() ![]() This means that when facing properly used quality spears or even a cavalry battle, the Saxons will Probably Suffer Badly. Whether it's the moderately better trained and equipped cavalry of others, mobile archers, massively armored and powerful proto-knights, or - god forbid- massively armored and powerful proto-knights acting as mobile archers (and yes, that is a thing the Eastern Romans have). Which is good for what they do (flank, run down enemy troops, recon, etc).īut it is Sorely lacking compared to what other factions can bring to the table. and that is, a handful of moderately decent standard melee cavalry. Using even the last one alone and doing it well can singlehandedly turn the tide againt the Saxons, as it not only will damage their proud infantry but leave them somewhat disordered just before first contact.Ĭavalry are the ideal counterpoint to this.So let's look at what they have. Whether it's the long bow cavalry or troops used by the Eastern Empires (often on horseback), the crossbow infantry, or even the infantry throwing darts or axes that the Romans and Franks use. The hunters are all they ahave, and while they're good for what they are they don't have the sort of flexibility of others. They also lack much in the way of missile troops. If they don't break or seriously damage an enemy formation on the initial charges they'll likely get bogged down and vulnerable to the swing back. Their initial charge rating and attack values are impressive, but their preformance when pelted by missile file, charged in the back by cavalry, or facing disciplined spear formations or sword ones up close is not. They live or die by their infantry charges and attacks. As is their ranged infantry Type (as in one), Hunters.īut the problem is evident just looking at it. Their melee infantry is by and large solid. With the corollary that "once broken, they are easily crushed." They rely on "Morale, Strenght of Will, and an All out Charge to batter their enemies into submission." Fundamentally speaking, they remind me almost Exactly of what Marcus the Tutorial Centurion says about "Barbarian" Armies. Their only noteworthy fact is their presence and position on the campaign map, and how important they are to Saxon campaign objectives. They are the bog standard barbarian boats, well inferior to what the Westerners and Persians can and will put to sea. Starting off, their boats are really not notable. ![]() If you try and take on the sort of balanced heavy and archer cavalry rosters they can field witht he Saxons you're going to be in for some serious trouble. I notice you haven't mentioned the Eastern Civs yet, and I have a gut feeling as to why. But looking at it from the straight up, the Saxons really, Really do not trump all. You can win as any faction or lose as any faction (and I have this peculiar pleasure in taking the Roxolani and trying to hold the initial position against the massive Hunnic armies at the start of the game). ![]()
